Just like mom used to make?
A recent article in the Globe and Mail discussed the eating habits of our modern society. In particular, the article emphasized that pre-packaged food is a convenience that many rely on. Time is a precious commodity and Canadians are eating fewer home-cooked meals than ever before. Of course, companies realize this as well as the fact that health is important to people, so a lot of frozen and processed foods are marketed heavily as being “natural”, “wholesome”, and “healthy”. It is a very powerful draw that attracts health-conscious consumers.
Terms such as “low calories”, “low sodium”, “low fat”, “high fibre”, etc. trick shoppers into spending extra for less nutritious food options. Its all a bunch of misleading marketing. The truth is that these foods are nowhere near as healthy as food that you cook yourself. While those frozen dinners you put in the shopping cart may be low in fat, they are usually loaded with sodium or other preservatives. The end result is that these foods are leading to unhealthy diets overall.
Eat whole foods. Avoid shopping in the aisles of the grocery store and shop on the outside – the produce section, the bakery, the deli, etc. Reduce the number canned, boxed, or frozen foods in your shopping cart. Choose fruits, vegetables, lean meats and learn to cook. It’s easier than you think!
